New York: the things we did not do

We saw Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps last night, and the only thing I liked about it was the location - New York - which reminded me of this post that I planned to write. New York is an amazing city that I would LOVE to go back to. So here are some things we did not do during our visit in October, that I would like to do the next time we visit:

- we spent too little time in Brooklyn (we had lunch at Grimaldi's and dinner at Vinegar Hill House), so I would love to explore Brooklyn much more
- taste Mast Brother's Chocolate
- see Manhattan from a boat, for example the Staten Island Ferry
- a lot of people have recommended the city tour buses, so I think I would like to check it out
- see a Broadway show
- amateur night at the Apollo
- visit jazz clubs
- visit MoMA again (in the morning, when I'm not already filled up with other impressions)
- visit The Met and other galleries in general
- try out even more of Brian's excellent restaurant tips; Momofuku, Shopsins and Katz's Deli
- check out more of the Michelin guide's restaurant recommendations
- have another meal at Pastis, The Spotted Pig, The Standard Grill and Shake Shack (links here)
- visit Eataly
- see the city from above during daytime (we only did it at night)
- have a picnic in Central Park
- just walk the streets and explore
- maybe visit Coney Island
- attend a Sunday service in a Harlem church
- visit the New York Public Library
- maybe do a little shopping...

Any other suggestions?

Monday October 25: En route to Newark airport via Copenhagen. Champagne, heart shaped snacks, Sex and the City 2 and The A-team (both not so good, but ok entertainment) plus the company of my reading husband. New York; here we come!

july travels

I did a bit of traveling in July; lots of driving in Norway and a little bit in Sweden, airplane travels in Norway, and train travel to Sweden. I'm at Flesland airport in Bergen right now, ready for some more traveling. Abroad. I will bring home photos and stories.

Bath

After three days of hen do in Centre Parcs Longleat Forest, we headed back to London to fly home to Bergen. We changed trains in Bath, which made me think of Susannah who lives there. The lady I talked to on the train, said Bath is a beautiful city. I guess I should make a proper visit one day.

summer roadtripping

My roadtrip cameraphone snapshots continues.

During our two weeks of summer vacation we drove ca 2500 km. That is the same distance as from Bergen to somewhere between Milan and Rome, Italy. Btw, I love using Google Maps to plan our trips. Below I have added links to maps that show every distance we drove. If you are a map nerd like me, you can check it out.

We started with a trip to Mandal (map) to visit friends at their cabin. Then we drove to Ombo (map) to some other friends at their cabin. It has been a while since I have been in this part of southwestern Norway, so it was a nice reminder of how beautiful it is there.

After Ombo we stopped by Sandnes (map) on our way to the mountain cabin (map). Goats and especially sheep are not an uncommon sight along mountain roads in Norway.



After a week in the mountains we stayed one night in Sandnes at my in laws' before we headed to Oslo (map) - where we stayed at Hotel Bristol. The building in the photo above is the Opera House (by Norwegian architects Snøhetta) in Oslo. I was there for the first time last summer. It is a beautiful building!


While Sølve spent a day in Oslo working, I drove to Arvika, Sweden (map) to get a little something done with our Saab (again). I picked up Sølve in Oslo before we drove to Hvaler (map) to visit friends at their cabin. It was a beautiful sunny day. The next day it poured down.

After Hvaler we stopped by our friends in Rygge on our way to Skien (map) to visit family on my mother's side. The photo above was taken on the ferry between Moss and Horten. I remember this Bastøfergen well from when I was little; we lived in Rygge and visited my grandpartens in Skien.




Finally we drove home to Bergen (map) via the beautiful Haukelifjell (the Haukeli mountain). The last time we were at Haukelifjell was for this skiing trip in March 2009. Sølve made our roadtrip meals; whole grain bread with pesto, spiced ham, Jarlsberg cheese and cherry tomatoes. Yum! Btw, the waterfall above was close to Odda and the fjord in the second last photo is Kvinnheradsfjorden.

I shot a little film too during our vacation. I'll show you when I have had them developed. In the meantime I have lots of other film shots to show you from the last couple of months; more roadtrips, more London and more outdoors.

Hotel Bristol, Oslo

About one month ago, whilst on this roadtrip, Sølve and I stayed at Hotel Bristol in Oslo. That's when I took these shots (film: Fuji Provia 100F). It's a really nice respectable hotel. I liked it a lot. We stayed there again a couple of nights ago during our short stay in Oslo, before I did a quick roadtrip to Arvika, Sweden - and then we headed out to a seaside cabin at Hvaler.

roadtrip: Arvika - Bergen

My longest ever solo roadtrip started at 8:30 am in Arvika, Sweden on Thursday July 15.

After ca 35 min I stopped in Charlottenberg to tank. That is when I learnt the difference between E85 and 95... Luckily Ole at Engelbrekts Motor helped me get rid of some of that E85. Then I bought some Swedish magazines and Champagne at Systembolaget and left Charlottenberg at 1130am.

I passed a lot of logs on my way to Elverum.

Arvika was really sunny and warm. The weather changed as I drove further into Norway.

I passed a lot of pines...

...and enjoyed my roadtrip snack.

Between Hamar and Dokka it rained a lot.

After Filefjell the sun came out. There were quite a few campervans on the road.

Those blue lights in Lærdalstunnelen are amazing.

This photo and an exchange of MMS photos lead to a very random dinner date with Øystein and his lady at Fretheim hotel in Flåm.

Close to Voss I passed some cows crossing the river. Finally, after about 670 km, I arrived in Bergen at 11:30 pm.

Friday afternoon Sølve and I got in the car for another roadtrip. This time to Mandal, on the southern coast of Norway. We are going to do a whole lot of driving the next couple of weeks. Our summer vacation has started!
